Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree from the University of Minnesota and is currently pursuing his Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through the College of William and Mary in Virginia. He is currently a Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) and is completing his internship in mental health counseling through Minds in Motion.
Tom has been working at the intersection of mental health and addiction for the past 5 years. Having worked in community mental health, correctional facilities, outpatient and residential addiction treatment settings, Tom has a breadth of knowledge of the difficulties facing those trying to change their substance using and other addictive behaviors. He also understands the intricate impact co-occurring mental health disorders have on recovery.
As an intern at Minds in Motion, Tom will be broadening his skill set to treating mental health disorders that occur separate from or in conjunction with substance use under Angela Melzer’s tutelage. His goal with his clients is to use a collaborative, practical, yet gently challenging approach to empower clients to be the agents of their own change. He helps his clients regulate their emotional experience, tolerate distress, become mindful of their cognitions and sensations, and live a purposeful life. Tom helps his clients achieve these ends by utilizing his training and education in Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Existential Psychotherapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
Tom specializes in treating men by helping them break down stigmas of asking for help, relieve feelings of shame, and to challenge society’s rules about masculinity so they can lead a congruent and healthy life.
